The television landscape has remained a safe escape for viewers during the wild year of 2016. From a real-life murder trial to a time-traveling romance to a superpowered girl named Eleven, here's a list of this year's top television shows:

Outlander

Based on the historical time travel Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon, tells the story Claire Randall, a married World War II nurse who in 1945 finds herself transported back to the Scotland of 1743, where she finds the Highland warrior Jamie Fraser and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings. The TV show is a romantic ride in the Scottish Hills and the chemistry between show leads Caitriona Balfe and San Heughan is off the charts.

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

Although Bee is not your usual heroine - she is not concerned with being fair - but everyone can relate to her thanks to her sense of humor. Constantly battling in a field dominated by men, Samantha Bee proves the best political humor comes from passion and experience.

Westworld

Based on the 1973 film of the same name, the story takes place in the fictional Westworld, a technologically advanced, Wild West-themed amusement part populated by androids dubbed "hosts". The performance of both Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel Wood is admirable and the world the show depicts makes it worth watching - a reflection on society today.

Transparent

Mort tries to tell his secret to his children about why he is divorced and girlfriend-less, but his children are self-absorbed and don't show interest to hear his story. It's not until he finds his married daughter kissing her ex. Then she tells him her secret and he tells her his. Then family secrets start to unfold.

Game of thrones

The Americans

Often compared to Breaking Bad, the espionage thriller is a masterclass on identity and family. The story is about two spies in an arranged marriage who are posing as Americans in suburban Washington, D.C., shortly after Ronald Reagan is elected president.

Bojack Horseman

An animated humanoid-horse is a top television show of the year. The show depicts the downside to fame. It's sad and hilarious and everything in between.

Stranger things

Perhaps this is the best TV show that has been conceived by 2016. Set in the 80s, the series blends numerous genres and provides an excellent binge. This drama stars award-winning actress Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, who lives in a small Indiana town in 1983.

Atlanta

This is one of the top cities for young rappers looking to make a name for themselves in the business. The show is funny and fresh.

American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson

American Crime Story brought the story to life when the O.J. Simpson trial was once again front and center in the cultural zeitgeist.
