Golden Globe Awards
honored the best in film and American television of 2016 and was broadcast live on January 8, 2017 from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California by NBC and we think was more memorable so we'll review that here.
Jimmy Fallon was announced as the host of the ceremony, while Meryl Streep was announced as the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award honoree. The nominations were announced by Don Cheadle, Laura Dern and Anna Kendrick.
La La Land won all seven awards for which it had been nominated, becoming the most successful film in Golden Globe Awards history and seventh overall to win each award for which it was nominated, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, for Damien Chazelle and Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
The best comic bit was the one in the introduction for the best animated feature. Kristen Wiig an Steve Carell joked about their tragic childhood memories involving animated films while presenting best animated feature.
"Do you remember the first time you saw an animated movie?" Wiig asked Carell. "Dad took me to see Fantasia," he replied. He then talked about how when he left the movie, his mother was standing in the theater lobby. "That was the moment she told my dad that she wanted a divorce," Carell said, never cracking a smile. He somberly joked he never saw his father again.
As the camera cut to audience members laughing at the bit, it was Wiig's turn to share her tragic animated feature memories. She talked about her grandfather taking her to see Bambi after her three dogs were put down. Her pets were named Jack, Janet and Chrissy as a nod to Three's Company.
Like Carell, she said it was the last day she ever saw her grandfather. He disappeared and she didn't talk to him for two years, she said, adding long pauses alongside Carell while making the audience.
Then the pair went on to announce Zootopia as the winner.
The most overused comic bit was the one about Sofia Vergara not being a native English speaker. She came out and said "anal" twice and then "anus" the joke is that she can't pronounce "annual".
The most elegant speech was delivered by Tracee Ellis Ross. She won the Globe for best actress in a comedy ("black-ish"), Ross said that her award was also for "all of the women, women of color and colorful people whose stories, ideas and thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important." She said that it's "an honor" to be on a show that tells stories "outside of where the industry usually looks." She also seemed absolutely delighted to have won.
